Cheng Hsiao, Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California and Fellow of the Econometric Society, paid a visit to the College of Economics, Xiamen University in May 2024 and gave a week-long course named “Special Topics on Panel Data Econometrics” to graduate students from May 22 through May 29. The course unfolds an in-depth exploration of the core themes and latest developments of panel data econometrics.
Prof. Hsiao has served on the advisory boards of the Pacific Economic Review and Singapore Economic Review, and as the Editor of Journal of Econometrics for over two decades. His research interests include theoretical and applied econometrics. He has published extensively in these areas, with numerous research articles in leading journals such as Econometric Theory, Econometrica, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and Journal of Econometrics, and several books, including Analysis of Panel Data and Panel Data Econometrics. As an authoritative scholar in panel data research, Prof. Hsiao has made significant contributions to the methodology and application of panel data econometrics.
The course “Special Topics on Panel Data Econometrics” engages students in first-class lectures, broadens their horizons, and gets them closer to international academic frontier research. Through in-depth discussions and active participation in problem solving and case studies, the students will not only improve on professional knowledge, but also get inspired for future academic research.
During his visit, Prof. Hsiao also spent time commenting on the papers of our doctoral students and having teatime with our students across all levels, providing his insights on the learning and research on economics.
